Bump it!
Old Man Winter – THANK YOU!Desperately needed moisture has fallen over the past several months. Now the fun begins! This undoubtedly is the busiest time of year as it pertains to your landscaped areas and many aspects of this have been compounded with the amount of moisture we received. Pre-emergent: Weeds could be the most prevalent thing growing in your yard this year. Applying pre-emergent right now could yield tremendous dividends in controlling weed growth throughout the spring and summer months. Pre-emergent herbicides sterilize seeds that have blown in during fall and winter. It is important to treat your landscaped areas before you see weeds appear. Treating existing weeds will be a waste of your time and money. Remember, this is a proactive treatment. More importantly, pre-emergent requires moisture to achieve the highest success in stopping weeds from germinating. A second application in late July and August will help to maintain things getting out of control approaching fall.
Lawn care: Pre-emergent herbicides must be applied early in the growing season. Think of it as vaccinating your lawn against weeds. Aerating will benefit your lawn by loosening soil and reducing thatch buildup. Be sure to aerate while the grass is actively growing and moist. If the soil is dry, the aerators will not properly penetrate the ground. Ideally, this process works best after a good rain. Fertilization: Within in the next several weeks, properly fertilizing your trees, plants and lawn will be a must! A higher Nitrogen content will be required to bring everything out of the dormant state. Phosphate and Potash content will be important as it relates to yielding root development or blossoms. Erosion control: Although the recent rain/snowfall was light in nature, many properties experienced considerable erosion due to the high level of moisture retained within the soil. Pay considerable attention to this prior to our monsoons arriving. If proactive measures are not taken before large volumes of rainfall or sheet flows of water occur, a small fix could instantly turn into a major undertaking. The small areas of erosion that may have occurred over the winter months have broken down the upper crust of soil and exposed soil that is now easily moved.
