Using paint to transform a room and a home

One of my favorite ways to transform a space is with the introduction of color and typically the best way to achieve a different look is thru the use of paint.  The correct selection of color is not always a quick or easy process.  I have just finished a project where the clients hired me to come up with a new interior color palette for all areas of the house.  They did not give me any limitations in specifying the colors except that they wanted the place to appear warm and cozy.

My first step in selecting paint colors is to take notice of the natural light available in the rooms and space while also studying all of the existing colors and tones of items that will remain in the room such as the flooring material, window and door colors, trim colors and any articles of furniture.  After I analyze the existing conditions I then determine if new items will be introduced into the room such as upholstered pieces of furniture, artwork, bedding, window treatments, etc.  These aforementioned items give parameters and direction as to what colors could work within the space and this is the point when I start pulling samples from my specification deck of paint swatches and begin building the color palette.

For this specific client I specified a different color for every room while still keeping all of the selections in a deep saturated and complimentary combination.  Since some of the home has open areas with rooms opening onto each other it was imperative that the paint colors viewed at the same time create a visual “flow” of color and this is only achieved when complimentary tones are used.

Since color is a visual stimulate different colors and tones can evoke different feelings and emotions in each of us such as restfulness, serenity, active, somber, cheerful, etc.  There are studies dedicated to the psychology of color and how different colors can and will affect our moods thus it is important that my clients have the final say in what colors are selected for their space since ultimately they will be the ones who are living in the environment.

Throughout this article I have been giving you a peek at the before photos of this home as well as the after [transformation] photos.  One of my favorite transformations for this home was the Kitchen area.  The change in the paint color for the Kitchen not only accentuated the existing cabinetry but it also gave a new life to the floor as well as the beautiful trim work and doors which were existing in the home.  I pulled the color from the accents in the stone countertops as well.

Another one of my favorite transformations was the fireplace.  Before it was truly the only accent and splash of color in the home and now we’ve done the reverse by minimizing the visual impact with a faux plaster finish on the fireplace we’ve kept it as a focal point in the space however it is no longer a focal point that jumps out at you.

The interior of this home has taken on a whole new personality and appearance just thru the introduction of color and specifically by the use of paint.  The home while beautiful before has now achieved the next level of interior décor by making each room and area a special and different space which stand alone while still complementing each other.  This project is a perfect example as to how an entire home or just a few rooms can be transformed with the use of paint.
