About those ads you see everywhere...

Hello! It is a picture perfect Saturday in Prescott, Arizona. I'm Gary Edelbrock, and I've been talking to Lee Amble about realtors and advertising. Enjoy.

Buyers/Sellers Beware Of Phony /Baloney Advertising!!

By Lee Amble, Consultant/Realtor

I have been in the business of Real Estate for 37 years, which means I probably remember too much about the good old days of a one page contract, a handshake and all people being trustworthy. All concerned (buyers, sellers, realtors, etc.) know it’s totally different now and it is not all for the best. In my opinion, there is too much paper and too many people that are not always trustworthy and honest, (the majority do not fall into this category) Some of you may think differently, but then that’s what life is about: differences – some good – some bad!

This will be a very short writing as we just got back from North Dakota visiting our son, daughter-in-law, and family; daughter (Tammy & Dr. Steve Linn—former residents of Prescott) and their 3 sons. Unfortunately, we’re sad our other daughter, Twila Brutinel and her family are not able to join us. (4 of our 10 grandchildren will be there!)

The following has been in my mind for so long, I feel it’s time to present them to you. I do feel it will be a great benefit to many and may save you both money and a whole lot of frustration and misery.

I am going to address only COME ON ADVERTISING., which, in my opinion, should be outlawed. They apply to real estate and retirement type ads, etc. and are in our local newspapers and other print ads. I will only have a short focus on a couple of real estate ads.

Ads: The type of ads I’m referring to are made only to induce you to call in to an 800 number, email, or anyway to get you to contact them in order to make it possible to contact you. In my opinion, I see these ads as not having any worth for buyers or sellers. I personally would not reply to them in any way or manner. Are they ashamed of their names and their company name? The print with their name, etc. is so tiny you may need to use a magnifying glass to find the name of the person to contact. Again, in my opinion, it’s disgusting.

There are many of my readers who do not always want contact with a realtor and it’s disgusting for them to be tricked into it. If you are thinking about buying or selling, and you want a lot of good, helpful information, go to the library, internet or as I do on many things, go to a book store and buy a current book on buying or selling your home. You may be surprised at the amount of information you will gain; perhaps, probably more than any phony baloney ads. A lot of information is available for your for $20.00 to $50.00 and when you look at it, it’s a small price to pay for current information on one of your biggest investments.

A couple of ads I am talking about relate to the following:

  1. I can sell your home in so many days or I will pay a certain amount of money if I don’t. Well, first when you refer to the asterisk, it says terms and conditions may apply. What are they? I guess that blows the whole idea as the terms and conditions could be that your price would be so low, it would sell fast and they would not have to pay you anything, but the advertiser would now have your name, etc. and try to hook you in, one way or another. When you have ads that indicate certain terms and conditions, the first person I would call would be the Arizona Department of Real Estate to check out the salesperson and company. (that is if you can find the names and read them)
  2. Ad: Quick and Easy Fix Ups to sell your Home Fast and for Top Dollar by calling an 800 number. Do you really want them to call you? Again, I would go to the book store, library, and/or internet and invest in a real estate book that would give you real ideas; no hitches, no obligations, just useful information or call a Realtor that doesn’t advertise with the type of ads I’ve referred to.

Well, that’s my ideas on those type of ads plus there are many more in various types of business. You make your own choices, after all, it’s a free country, but please do your research, it’s easy and money saving.

Remember, any ad that has an * (asterisk) that says certain terms and conditions may apply that that’s exactly what it means. READ IT CAREFULLY

Thank you again for reading!
