billexerciseYavapai County has fared well in County health rankings. According to a new report, Yavapai ranked higher than the majority of other Arizona counties in several different health categories. Yavapai was ranked second in health factors that look at areas that affect people's health within 4 categories, including health behavior, clinical care, social and economic factors and physical environment. Community Health Services offers free health promotion programs to the public and local schools, which may have impacted the high rankings. Yavapai also ranked 7th among the state's 15 counties in the Health Outcome category. These outcomes were measured by the rate of people dying before the age of 75, the percentage of people in fair or poor health, the number of days people report being in poor physical and poor mental health and the rate of low birth weight infants.

The Yavapai County Community Health Center has received a $6000 grant. The grant comes from Fry's Food Stores Giving Hope a Hand campaign and the Center will use the grant to pay for mammograms and breast diagnostic services for uninsured and low income patients throughout the County. Funds raised by the annual cause marketing campaign go to assist dozens of local organizations in fighting breast cancer in communities across the country by supporting research projects, funding mammograms and educational outreach and assisting local support groups for women and families.

A Phoenix man has been arrested by Prescott Valley Police for the alleged molestation of a child. The father of a 13 year old girl contacted police about a possible child molestation case. He believed his daughter had possibly had sexual contact with a man from the Phoenix area. He further reported the 2 may have met on the internet through a social networking site. Police opened an investigation an learned the suspect, identified as 23 year old Sergio Barrera corresponded with her on the computer and eventually set up a meeting with her at a Prescott Valley motel. With the assistance of Phoenix Police, he was taken into custody. Police spokesman Brandon Bonney says they are trying to determine if there are other victims:

Barrera faces 2 counts of molestation of a child.

The prison facility issue will be back before the Prescott Valley Town Council at 5:30 tonight. According to Town Attorney Ivan Legler, preliminary proposals have been made by the Fain Signature Group and the Prescott Valley Economic Development Foundation for an area outside of town to be annexed, rezoned and provided with services to be a location for one or more private prisons. In the resulting controversy, both proponents and opponents have suggested that the question be placed on the ballot. Developer Brad Fain says he would like to see resolution on this issue.

Legler has offered options to council for the property, such as an annexation ordinance, a minor general plan amendment, an ordinance changing the applicable zoning district and a resolution adopting a development agreement. There is also the prospect of legislation that would specifically authorize Arizona cities and towns to place a prison question on the ballot.
