Captain Jim Kennedy receives the Arizona Fire Fighter of the Year Award.

Daniel Matlick, President and CEO of the United Fire Equipment Company, presented Prescott's Fire Captain Jim Kennedy with the Arizona Firefighter of the Year Award on Thursday morning, lauding his courage, honesty, integrity and courage,.

Kennedy, who has been with the Prescott Fire Department (PFD) since 1987, explained that when he first applied, he was turned down. But, a year later, he was given a job, and he's been with the City of Prescott ever since, advancing to Captain about 15 years ago.

In addition to his duties as a Fire Captain, Kennedy is an adjunct instructor at Yavapai College, instrumental in training about 2000 fire fighters in the Fire Science program, and many of his students now serve in local area fire departments.

Kennedy is known as a 'go-to' guy, and it's said that if you have to be rescued, you want him to be the rescuer. His dependability, and quick thinking are critical in emergency situations.

One thing that stood out during the awards ceremony was the affection and honor Kennedy holds for not only his wife, but for his entire family. He actually began his firefighting career in Seligman, volunteering for his Dad, who was in charge of the local fire department. When he accepted the award, he said that his dad's name should be right above his, because that's why he became a firefighter.

As for now? Well, Kennedy plans to continue working, noting that he's got quite a few years left in him, and he loves his job.
