Fatal Shooting in Chino Valley

Suspect in custody, investigation continues.

On September 26, 2012 at 6:25 p.m., Chino Valley Police responded to a residence in the 800 block of West Road 1 South after receiving a call from a neighbor who had witnessed a shooting.

Upon arrival, officers located one victim, later identified as James W. Brooks, age 47, who had suffered a fatal gunshot wound. Officers detained several people at the residence including a subject identified as Dale Edward Gibson, 51. Based on information at the scene as well as a witness to the shooting, officers determined that Gibson and Brooks were involved in an altercation which led to Gibson retrieving a handgun from inside the residence and shooting Brooks, killing him instantly. Gibson was taken into custody and later booked into the Yavapai County Jail in Camp Verde on one count of First Degree Murder.

Brooks, Gibson and several other people were identified as roommates who have shared the residence in Chino Valley for the last several years.

CVPD Detectives have obtained a Search Warrant for the residence and will be processing the crime scene this morning.
