Yavapai College will host a Valentine Movie Night tonight. In order to show off its newly renovated Performance Hall and new high definition movie projector, the College will present the 2009 romantic comedy “The Proposal” starring Sandra Bullock and Ryan Reynolds at 7:30. At 9:15, the 2004 drama “The Notebook” starring James Garner, Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams will be shown. This is a free event open to the public and refreshments will be available at the concession stand. The Performance Hall is located on Sheldon Street in Prescott.
College officials have also announced the Tri-Cities Kindergarten Fair will be held from 9 to noon on Saturday, February 25th. Parents of children approaching kindergarten age are invited to the 2nd annual Fair, which will be held in Building 19, Room 147 on the Prescott campus.
The Town of Dewey-Humboldt will celebrate Arizona’s 100th birthday at 2:14 tomorrow afternoon. Residents plan on celebrating the Centennial outside Town Hall and at Humboldt Elementary School. Students and teachers at will gather near the school’s flagpole. Visitors are welcome at either location to join a 10 second countdown followed by a full minute of bell ringing, horn blowing, flag waving and the singing of the Happy Birthday song to Arizona. The choir will perform at the school and the Town’s Historical Society’s Centennial Monument Tablet will be on display at Town Hall on South Highway 69.
Also at Town Hall tomorrow, Council will meet in a special session at 2 to discuss potentially filling the Hearing Officer vacancy with the Town Magistrate, direction to staff or the Museum Subcommittee on a proposal to purchase a building for a museum and approval of the Mayor’s expenditures.
The Yavapai County Sheriff’s Office is putting Camp Verde Jail inmates to good use. According to Sheriff’s Office officials, recently a crew of inmates was assigned to litter and trash pickup along a 1 mile stretch of Highway 260 in Camp Verde. On that particular day, 26 bags worth of litter were picked up from both sides of the highway.
An inmate work crew was also recently utilized for landscape work around the Sheriff’s Office Evidence Building in Prescott Valley. Inside the Camp Verde Detention Center, inmate workers are used daily in the kitchen where as many as 1800 meals are prepared during each 24 hour period. Selected inmates also process 1200 pounds of laundry per day and are assigned to facility maintenance, which includes care of floors and all painted surfaces in the 108 thousand square foot building. Inmates who are allowed to participate in various assignments are all screened and considered minimum custody. Workers receive credit against their daily meal expense and a small weekly allowance.
An 82 year old Camp Verde man has been charged with driving on a suspended license. According to Cottonwood Police, a patrol officer noticed a vehicle traveling on Highway 260 over the posted speed limit. The driver didn’t stop despite the officer turning on his overhead emergency vehicle lights and sounding the air horn. Roger Smith finally stopped, but he wouldn’t comply with the officer’s commands, so he was handcuffed. Smith was treated at the scene for a large bump on his right hand that started to bleed when the handcuffs were on him. He was cited and released for driving on a suspended license as well as for failing to yield to an emergency vehicle. Smith’s truck was towed from the scene.
A Prescott Valley man is facing an additional sexual abuse charge. On January 30th, 25 year old James Briant was arrested after he allegedly touched the breast of an 18 year old female who was in line at the Circle K store on Highway 69 and Prescott East Highway. Reports indicate 2 days prior to that incident, Briant allegedly did the same thing to a 12 year old girl at the Fry’s Store on Glassford Hill Road. The victim reported the incident to an adult, but police were not initially notified. Briant, who was already in custody for the January 30th incident, was interviewed and he admitted to being in the store and possessing clothing similar to that the victim described the suspect as wearing. He has been booked on an additional charge of sexual abuse.
