We will be keeping this situation updated on PrescotteNews.com.

According to several reports, Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, representing southern Arizona, has been shot during a meeting with constituents this morning at a Tucson grocery store. Whether or not Giffords survived is unknown.

Several others were also shot, and AZCentral is quoting a University Medical Center spokesman, Darci Slaten, as stating that at least four people have died, but that Giffords was in surgery as of 12:05 this afternoon.

Giffords was first elected in Congress in 2006; she won re-election last November in a very close race against challenger Jesse Kelly.

District 1 US Representative Paul Gosar joined Giffords as part of the Arizona delegation this month. His office just sent out the following email:

U.S. Congressman Paul Gosar, DDS (AZ-01) and his wife Maude released the following statement today:

“Today our thoughts and prayers are with Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, her family, her staff, and those injured in this horrible tragedy.  Gabrielle is a selfless public servant and we are all praying for her. -Maude and Paul Gosar"

Arizona House of Representatives Majority Leader, Andy Tobin just posted on Facebook, "Please pray for victims in Tucson shooting, insluding Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords... This is a time for Prayer."

Governor Jan Brewer also expressed her thoughts, "Please join me in prayer for the health of Rep. Gabrielle Giffords and several other individuals who were shot this morning in Tucson."

Quotes from other elected officials include:

Speaker of the House, John Boehner, “I am horrified by the senseless attack on Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords and members of her staff,” newly elected House Speaker John Boehner said. “An attack on one who serves is an attack on all who serve. Acts and threats of violence against public officials have no place in our society. Our prayers are with Congresswoman Giffords, her staff, all who were injured, and their families. This is a sad day for our country.” (from the Arizona Capitol Times)
