From Sectionals to the State Competiton, this will be a week of wrestling.

Prescott High School, Mingus High School, Chino Valley High School, and Camp Verde High School all showed outstanding results in the State Wrestling Sectional Tournaments held in twelve towns and cities around Arizona on Friday and Saturday. Prescott came in second in the team standings at the Division II Section III tournament at Shadow Mountain High School in Phoenix. They will be sending nine of their Varsity wrestlers to the state championships at Tim’s Toyota Center in Prescott Valley next weekend on February 9, 10 and 11. Bradshaw Mountain didn’t fare so well, sending only one wrestler to State this year.

In Division III Section I both Chino Valley and Mingus did very well. Six Chino Valley and eight Mingus wrestlers will compete. In Division IV Camp Verde dominated their sectional tournament and will be sending eleven wrestlers to State.

Prescott’s winners were headed by 120 lb. first place champion Mike Burkeen, a senior and team co-captain. Head Coach Eric Koehler said “I’m so proud of Mike, in both of his final matches he beat wrestlers who had beaten him in previous tournaments.” The other senior co-captain, Garrett Hagen received second place honors in the 145 lb. class. Also placing second were juniors Philip Eby at 132 lb. and Tyler Wilson at 195 lb. Placing fourth in their classes were sophomore Tim LaMaster at 138 lb. and Freshman Talon Vaughn at 125 lb. Also qualifying with fifth place were juniors Dominic Garduno, 160 lb., Zach Koehler, 170 lb., and freshman Saxon Vaughn, 106 lb.

Of the team’s second place finish in the tournament, Coach Koehler said that the whole team really stepped up their effort. “We’re peaking at just the right time,” he said. “Each member of the team wrestled hard and the results were phenomenal. We only beat out the third place team by three points, so every point counted for a lot.”

Bradshaw Mountain’s lone qualifier was 120 lb. Colton Audsley who placed sixth. Because he had the best record among sixth place winners, he received the wild card slot. Unfortunately, Bradshaw’s outstanding wrestler Tomas Medevielle was unable to compete because he broke his hand two weeks before the tournament. Medevielle had been considered among the best 145 lb. competitors in Division II by some experts.

At the Division III Section I tournament in Winslow both Chino Valley and Mingus wrestled very well. Chino Valley will be taking six wrestlers to State led by 170 lb. Patrick Dalcerro who placed second. Taking third were 113 lb. Kody Davis and 160 lb. Jake Lund. Two wrestlers placed fourth in their class, 106 lb. Stockton Heiner and 195 lb. Kishan Batcheldor. Colton Heiner, at 120 lb. placed fifth.

Mingus High School also had excellent results. They will have eight representatives at State including First place winners Hank Goetti at 132 lb., 145 lb. Dillon Lightfoot and 160 lb. Justin Zaske. They had two second places, 106 lb. Pal Scott and 152 lb. Connor Anderson. They rounded out their qualifiers with fourth place finishes by Chase Reams at 138 lb., Wyatt Midkiff at 182 lb. and John Hockman at 220 lb.

The Division IV Section I tournament was held in Wickenburg and included schools from the western side of Arizona, from Parker to Yuma. Local school Camp Verde High School dominated this event and will be taking eleven wrestlers to the state tourney. They scored four first places: 113 lb. Isaiah McReynolds, 120 lb. Ryan Allred, 126 lb. Jacob Dodge and 145 lb. Joel Lobaugh. Coming in second were 106 lb. Michael Casillas and 152 lb. Alex Anzar. Third were 132 lb. Michael Nelson and 195 lb. Elmer Ruiz. Fourth places were taken by 170 lb. Gabe Sallee and 220 lb. Anthony McBeth. Coming in sixth but qualifying for state on the basis of his record was Jeremy McEachern at 160 lb.

The State Tournament will be held at Tim’s Toyota Center in Prescott Valley again this year. Divisions III and IV will go first this year, beginning on Thursday February 9. Wrestlers will weigh in beginning at 8:30 am, doors will open at 9:30 am and wrestling will start at 10:00 am. There will be a pause after the first session and wrestling will continue at 4:30 pm.

Friday will begin at 10:00 am with the first rounds of division I and II. Division III and IV finals will start at 6:30 pm.

On Saturday the Division I and II wrestling will continue at 10:00 am and the finals will start at 4:30 pm

Ticket cost for this event will be: Adults $10 for one entry and $15 for an all day pass. High school students with ID will be $6. Children 5 and under free.
