IceMen Top Sundogs, 3-1, on Second Period Surge in Sunday's game
Two Teams Meet Again on Wednesday
EVANSVILLE, IN – Three unanswered goals in the second period was the difference on Sunday evening as the Evansville IceMen topped the Arizona Sundogs for a 3-1 win at the Ford Center in front of a crowd of 5,846.
The loss caps off Arizona’s (16-27-7) second straight three-game weekend and leaves the Sundogs tied with Laredo for sixth in the Berry Conference. Evansville (32-13-4) extends their Turner Conference lead over Fort Wayne to five points.
Trailing 1-0 entering the second period, Evansville scored three unanswered goals to take over the game. Todd Robinson started things 2:18 into the frame, tapping in a loose puck in the goal crease for his 17th goal and CHL-leading 71st point of the season. Mark Cody made it a 2-1 lead for the IceMen at 8:07 from the front of the net off Nick Lindberg’s centering pass and Sean O’Connor added a power play goal with 4:14 left in the period.
Arizona opened up the scoring on a power play goal by Kevin Petovello midway through the opening period.
Mike Spillane started his third straight game for the Sundogs and took the loss despite 36 saves. Brian Gillis earned the win for the IceMen, stopping 25.
The Sundogs went 1-for-2 on the power play while Evansville scored in their only man-advantage chance of the game.
Arizona and Evansville hook up again on Wednesday morning for their final meeting of the season. Game time is slated for 9:30 AM MST and the action can be heard on Cattle Country 94.3 FM.
Mallards Pull Away in Third for 7-3 Win on Saturday
Hood Extends Point Streak to Five Games
MOLINE, IL – The Arizona Sundogs closed the gap in the third period, but two late goals pulled the Quad City Mallards away for a 7-3 win on Saturday night at iWireless Center.
Justin Chwedoruk and Shane Lovedahl each scored for the Mallards (28-21-1) in the final five minutes of the third seal the win for Quad City. The Sundogs (16-26-7) had cut the Mallard lead to 5-3 with goals from Daymen Rycroft and Kevin Petovello.
John Snowden also scored at 3:25 of the third for Quad City.
Arizona’s Kyle Hood extended his point streak to five games with an assist. Tyler Butler remains on 99 career goals. Quad City’s Eric Giosa led all skaters with four points (two goals, two assists)
The Mallards took control of the game with a three-goal first period – scoring all three goals in a 3:10 span. Matt Duffy opened up the scoring on the power play with 5:34 left in the frame. John Snowden then buried a one-timer between the top of the circles less than a minute later and Eric Giosa lifted a shot in tight with 2:24 remaining for his third point of the game.
Arizona cut into the Mallard lead just 1:15 into period two as Olivier Proulx deflected Kyle Hood’s point shot for his fourth of the year, but Giosa added a power play goal for his fourth point of the night with 28 seconds left in the frame to give Quad City the 4-1 advantage.
Mike Spillane started the game in net for Arizona and took the loss, but was replaced after the opening period by Scott Reid who finished with …24 saves on the night. David McKee earned the win for the Mallards, stopping 31.
Arizona finished 1-for-4 on the power play. Quad City went 2-for-4.
The Sundogs wrap up their three-in-three weekend on Sunday when they visit the Evansville Icemen for the first meeting of the season between the two clubs. Game time is set for 4:05 PM MST and the action can be heard live on Cattle Country 94.3 FM.
