From 5 year-old kids to 60+ adults, about 100 people participate in the Chino Valley Triathlon.

medalwinners"You don't have to be young, skinny or fast. You just have to finish,"said Penny Nicholas, a participant in yesterday's Triathlon, held in Chino Valley. Nicholas, a well-known kindergarten teacher from Prescott's Washington School, took first place with a total time of 1:21:24 in the Mini Triathlon for women aged 65-69.

Tri-Family Racing was the organizer of the Town of Chino Valley Adult & Youth & Relay Sprint Triathlon & Duathlon.

Participants in the Mini event swam 150 yards, biked 7 miles and ran for one mile. The fastest time in the event was 41:57 - a virtual tie between Suzie Richardson (from the female 30-34 age group) and Jessica Wilder. The first and second place was determined by 100ths of seconds, with first being awarded to Richardson. Wilder's 2nd place showing was quite a feat - considering she's only 12 years old.

Because of her age, Wilder was placed in the youngest women's group - that of the 15-19 year olds. In that age group, Wilder was joined by Kayla Hankins, who is 8 years old. Hankins had the 4th best overall time in the women's Mini event at 49:07, despite the fact that she lost a pedal and had to replace it in the middle of the race. Hankins brother, Alex who is 5 years old, also participated in his first ever event.
