Many know the Prescott region has the cleanest air in the U.S. (American Lung Association's State of the Air), an exceptional quality of life and unparalleled natural beauty (check out www.VisitPrescott.com). But what many business owners from Los Angeles and Phoenix are discovering is that Prescott has a thriving commercial environment with competitive wage rates and a family friendly environment. They are also discovering the Prescott region has some impressive, coordinated resources for small businesses.
One such resource is the workforce development program provided by NACOG (Northern Arizona Council of Governments). Getting straight to the point, NACOG (www.Nacog.org) not only helps provide employee hiring and training, they will pay up to 50% of your new employees wages for the first two to three months on the job. This type of assistance has provided many businesses the confidence and support to grow.
Real World Example
Precision Laboratories (https://preclaboratories.com) is based in Cottonwood, AZ, and has become a staple in the scientific community through the years as a leading manufacturer of test strips and water analysis solutions for use by professional analysts and chemical laymen for immediate on-site analysis. Their original product was Litmus paper, which they continue to manufacture today. Their products are shipped throughout the world.
"NACOG offers assistance for us to hire and train new employees with an OJT (on-the-job) training program. They will pay half of the employee’s wages for the first two to three months of their position. Our NACOG contact, Debbie Estivariz, works with the company and our employees completing the program. She checks in regularly to make sure the employees are learning and growing into their positions, and checks to see if there are any issues or anything they might need. NACOG offers assistance to employees who might not have the means. For example, if an employee needs something in order to be able to perform their job, NACOG will help purchase the item for them. Another example would be if an employee cannot afford gas to get to work, NACOG will help as much as they can by purchasing a gas gift card for that employee. Their services and assistance are above and beyond.
Additionally, NACOG also put us in touch with the Arizona Manufacturing Extension Partnership (MEP), and they offered us assistance at no charge in several areas of our business. For example, they came in to sit down and look at lean manufacturing options with us, they did Value Stream Mapping, discussed some aspects of marketing, and so on. This was another great resource that would not likely have been an opportunity for us if not for NACOG," stated Precision Laboratories.
Competitive wage rates, coordinated business support, unparalleled beauty and a family friendly environment are just a few of the reasons small businesses and light manufacturers are beginning to line up at our region's doorstep. Did we mention it only takes 10 minutes to get across town and there is no traffic like that of Los Angeles or Phoenix? Contact the Greater Prescott Regional Economic Partnership (GPREP) and ask for Richard Heath, Executive Director to get more information on a region many consider a dream to live, work and play.
