His real name is Samuel Joseph Wurzelbacher, and he was working for a plumbing contractor when he asked then-candidate Barack Obama, "I'm getting ready to buy a company that makes 250 to 280 thousand dollars a year. Your new tax plan's going to tax me more, isn't it?"
Obama responded in part, "It's not that I want to punish your success. I just want to make sure that everybody who is behind you, that they've got a chance at success, too… My attitude is that if the economy’s good for folks from the bottom up, it’s gonna be good for everybody. If you’ve got a plumbing business, you’re gonna be better off [...] if you’ve got a whole bunch of customers who can afford to hire you, and right now everybody’s so pinched that business is bad for everybody and I think when you spread the wealth around, it’s good for everybody."
Fast forward nearly four years, and now Joe the Plumber is running for office on his own, hoping to represent Ohio's 9th District Congressional seat. He already won in the primary, now he's looking to November, where he hopes to defeat Democrat Marcy Kaptur.
But, there's more! Joe the Plumber will also be in Prescott tonight (6-8 pm), at the Antelope Hills Clubhouse, appearing at a fundraiser for Arizona Senator Lori Klein, who is running for Arizona LD 1. There are two seats available, currently held by Speaker of the House Andy Tobin and incumbent Representative Karen Fann.
In addition to Joe the Plumber, Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio will be the other honored guest. Arpaio is endorsing Klein.
Don't want to pay $50 a seat to hear the Joes?
Tomorrow there will be a Patriot Rally at Mortimer's Family Farms, in Dewey-Humboldt. Joe the Plumber will be there, as well as former State Senator Russell Pearce.
