Warm Up to Savings with Frozen Foods

Freezing food was one of the giant steps in bringing nutritious, delicious food to many people. Before the invention of ice making equipment you were limited to what fresh food you could get and cook each day. In rural areas you might can food or store some items in a root cellar. In the early 1920s home refrigerators were invented, and by the 1940s most had a freezer compartment, leading to the expansion of the frozen food industry. Today, there seems a limitless array of frozen foods.

Are frozen foods as nutritious as freshly cooked? This depends on many factors. Vegetables now are usually frozen only minutes after being picked, while it may take many days for “fresh” items to be trucked or flown from their fields to distribution centers, and on to the stores, where they may sit around even longer before making it to the produce bins. Then again some things like peas and green beans freeze better than others like eggplant or  lettuce. It is safe to say that never in the history of the world has there been such a variety of food available to so many people, and much of that is frozen.

Not to mention ice cream!

Of course, you don’t have to purchase your frozen foods. You can make items and then freeze them yourself. Here’s a quick "How To" lesson in freezing foods properly. 

All local stores feature specials in their frozen food departments this week. 

Safeway has a $5 Friday March 9 and a page of clip or click coupons. Fry’s has 2 full pages of digital coupons, and a couple of digitals that are only good on Saturday. Fry’s also still has selected items on a Buy 4 Get $4 off deal.

This Wednesday is Senior Discount Day at Fry’s and Safeway, Patrons over 55 get 10% off their whole order.

5 Minute Frozen Yogurt

Recipe: Cheesy Pasta

Super Easy but Very Tasty
Makes 3 servings

Ingredients

1 1/2 cups small pasta (Fusilli, elbows, or bow ties)
1 Tablespoon butter
1 Tablespoon Olive Oil
Freshly Grated Parmesan Cheese
Freshly Ground Black Pepper
Salt (coarse)

Directions

Bring 2 quarts water to a boil. Add Pasta. Cook al dente. Drain all water. Place pasta back in pan. Add butter and oil. Stir together. Add salt and pepper. Serve with cheese.

Chicken and Rice Casserole
Spinach and Arugula Salad
Turnovers (frozen, fixed according to directions)

A Classic Casserole

Recipe: Spinach and Arugula Salad

Ingredients

1 Bag of Baby Spinach andArugula mix
6 strips of bacon, cooked crisp
1 or 2 Ripe Avocados, sliced
Grape Tomatoes
Blue Cheese Crumbles (Optional)

Directions

Cook Bacon. If you have not tried the oven cooking method you should. I line a sheet pan with foil. Pre-heat oven to 375º. Lay Bacon strips in pan. Cook 10-15 minutes (depending on thickness. Turn strips over. Cook 5 -10 minutes until done. Let Cool. Crumble into large pieces.

Place greens in bowl. Arrange avocados, tomatoes, bacon and blue cheese (if using) on top.

Serve with oil and vinegar on the side.
