Sales, Menus & Recipes: Heritage Recipes

29 April 2019
What is a Heritage Recipe?

It might be a recipe you wheedled out of your Grandmother, that she learned from her Mother. Or it could be an ethnic dish which was made in your family that you wrote down for your kids. Maybe something that your Mother cut out of a newspaper in 1964. Food is a family thing. You grow up eating the foods your parents like and that is meaningful to them. If you’re lucky someone in your family taught you how to cook. It could be your Grandmother making cookies with you when you were six years old, or you Grandfather showing you how to grill the perfect steak.

We will be featuring some recipes that have family connections and we would love it if you would share a recipe or two from your heritage. Just send us an e-mail, ????? If you have a photograph send that along too. Each recipe will be tested to make sure it works before it is published. So dust off that family cookbook, or search that card file and share your family traditions with our readers.

Herb and Citrus Oven Roasted Chicken Parts

How to Stir Fry Vegetables

Use any vegetables, make sure to add those that need more cooking time first.

Devil Dogs

Never seen one here. Must be an East Coast thing. You could also use a mini loaf pan. Wouldn’t bother with their Devil’s Food Cake batter. Try the one below, much better.

Heritage Recipe

Mrs. Algermission’s Apple Torte
Mrs. Algermission was a friend of my Grandmother’s in Lincoln Nebraska in the 20’s and 30’s. Back then apples were only available in the fall and winter. Mrs. Algermission’s mother had devised this recipe as a way to make an easy and tasty dessert out of the abundance of apples when they were in season.
2/3 cups all purpose flour
1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
2 eggs
3/4 cups sugar
2 teaspoons vanilla
2 cups of apples-sliced thin
1 cup chopped nuts (optional)
1/2 teaspoon each cinnamon and cardamom (Optional, not in the original recipe but I like it.)
Pre heat oven to 350º F.
Sift flour, baking powder and salt into a medium bowl. (Modern Alternative—put them in a bowl and whisk well.) In a small bowl, beat eggs. Add sugar and vanilla and beat well. Add wet mix to dry mix.
Add apple slices and nuts if using, mix well.
Bake in a well greased 8x8 pan for 45 minutes. It is helpful to make an aluminum foil sling to help remove it from the pan.
Serve with Ice Cream or Whipped Cream
