Are you tired of turkey, bored with green beans, craving something un-cranberry. New is the time to start testing out a new recipe or two. If you are the host for your Thanksgiving dinner, maybe just one new dish would help change up the meal a bit. If you are a guest, ask if you could bring something a little different this year. There is nothing wrong with the classics, but why not try something new.

We promised you midwestern apples this week, but found some worthy new ones in the stores this week (that you can actually buy.)
Winesap—this apple does appear here occasionally. If you see it, buy some. Good for cooking but also for eating and salads
Pacific Rose—Dense, tart, a really good cooker, maintains shape after cooking
Smitten—Medium sweet, juicy, a good eating apple
Lady Alice—Tart, spicy, another really good cooker, maintains good flavor even after oooking
Gold Rush—Tart, but with a complex flavor, great for applesauce, cooks quickly, mashes easily
Getting Ready for Thanksgiving
You have two weeks to go before Thanksgiving dinner. By now, you should have your guest list prepared, your seating planned and your menu decided on and tested. So, let’s go shopping!
First, since you know your menu, making your shopping list is pretty easy. But, here’s a trick:
Master Cooking Tip #1: Also plan your derivative (aka: leftovers) meals now. Add those items to your shopping list, too. For example, if you’re planning to make Turkey Lasagne with some of that delicious Thanksgiving Turkey, you’ll want to add extra mushrooms, tomato sauce, lasagne noodles and mozzarella cheese to your list. If you do it right, you shouldn’t have to go to the grocery store for a week after Thanksgiving.
If you’re planning to use a fresh turkey, you should order it now if you haven’t already. If you think you’ll use a frozen turkey, they’re already on sale in the stores. You might as well get that now so you won’t have to worry about it. If you purchase a large turkey, it could take as long as 6-7 days to defrost it in the refrigerator. While you’re at it, you might as well buy a larger turkey than you need, you can make awesome derivative meals from that!
While you’re at it, if you’re making green bean casserole with French Cut Green Beans, buy them right now! Stores run out of them fast, and a week from now you won’t find any.
Next, check the sales and buy any other supplies that have a shelf life, such as:
- Pumpkin puree
- Canned cranberries or fresh
- Any other canned food you’ll want
- Any frozen vegetables
- Any dried goods you might want - rice, beans, fruits, etc.
- Other baking supplies
- Alcoholic beverages
- Paper products: Toilet Paper, Paper Towels, Paper Plates, Napkins, etc.

Walmart is also offering free pickup services with a $30 minimum purchase. Walmart wants you reserve a time for pickup. Also, if you refer a friend you can get $10, plus your friend will get $10. They do not have delivery available.
Costco: Will give free 2-day delivery if your order is $75 or higher. If you go through Instacart, you can get free 2 hour delivery with a minimum $35 purchase.

Preparing for Thanksgiving
In order to prepare to serve something new for a big feast day, To reduce stress, try it out at least once ahead of time. Not taking this step is courting disaster. Maybe it will turn out great, but if it doesn’t, better you are the only one to see the flop.
Here are some suggestions, pick one and try something new.
Cranberries Giving you the Blues?
Ginger Pear Cranberry Sauce
If you don’t like the long pieces of zest hanging around, use a micro-plane. Why not use both candied and freshly grated ginger. Just test test as you go along.
For a Radical Change Try This Cranberry Chutney
Instead of gloppy green bean casserole, with oodles of salt, fat and carbs, try this.
Green Beans Almandine
Maybe a couple T good olive oil instead of butter, not too much lemon juice and a chiffonada of fresh basil leaved at the end? (Haricort Vert, Fench green beans, are available at Trader Joe’s. They really are better!)
Southern Green Beans
Reminds Me of North Carolina. Regular green beans work fine here.

This would work better if you cooked the apples separate from the roots. And some additional seasoning would also be a good idea, At least salt and fresh ground pepper, maybe some maple syrup? Add some soaked dried cranberries? Pacific Rose or Lady Alice apples would be good in this, also HoneyCrisp.
Not that Brussels Sprouts aren’t great in any form, but here’s something that may please even non-sprout folks.

My recipe is a little different, but this is a good recipe. I like to add some dried tart cherries and dried sweetened pineapple. You might try mixing the fruits with a little brandy to hydrate them somewhat. This also helps with the clumping she mentions.
