The ads came out today, and I’ll be honest here. I’m not seeing anything that makes me want to rush out to go shopping this week. That’s rare for me, just ask my husband.
Albertsons is is already focused on holiday turkeys, and they also have several Buy 1 Get 2 deals for meat. Fry’s has boneless pork half loins on sale for $1.88 lb.. They also have a Buy 1 Get 2 deal on pork ribs. Fry’s has store brand bacon for $2.99 a 16 oz. package.
Safeway has Top Loin Beef for $5.99 lb, and whole chickens for $.99 lb.
Now, you may be wondering why I am only mentioning meat? Obviously, there are plenty of other things on sale, like raspberries, apples, canned goods, even pizza. But, when I plan my menus, I start with meat, and then decide what to serve alongside it.
So, for our family, this is a good week to check out what’s in our freezer, and also look at what items the stores have marked down, but aren’t included in their sales fliers. That includes items that are close to the sell-by date that the stores want to get rid of quickly.
Non-meat price deals
That all being said, there certainly are some great deals on non-meat items. Sprouts offers Hass avocados for only $.49 each. I haven’t seen prices that low in ages.
Albertsons has raspberries for $.99, milk for $1.97, eggs, 18 count for $1.88 w/coupon, and grape tomatoes for $.99 lb. w/coupon. Cucumbers are just $.79 each, and limes are 4/$1. Store brand peanut butter is $1.49 w/coupon.
Safeway has tomatoes on the vine for just $.99 lb., and varieties of squash for $.99 lb.
Fry’s has honey crisp apples for $1.27 and other varieties for $.99 lb. They also have different varieties of squash.

Now, here’s something really terrific - did you know that you can cook your spaghetti squash in the microwave without cutting it first? I hate having to cut the spaghetti squash first, it’s hard and uncooperative. So, if your microwave is large enough, and your squash isn’t too large, you can simply poke some holes in it with a skewer or a knife first. Make sure you poke plenty of holes, you don’t want it to explode!
Put it in the microwave on high and let it cook for about 12 minutes. Check it every so often to see if it’s done. When you take it out of the microwave, let it rest for at least 10-15 minutes before you cut it in half. It might be steamy inside, so be careful not to burn yourself. Then scrape the seeds out, and you’ll be ready to eat!
Ok, so last week we were on an “All new recipe” binge. And we found some great recipes, let me tell you. But, I think that the favorite of the week was the Overnight Pumpkin Streusel French Toast With Caramel Syrup. It was completely amazing.

We made a few changes to the recipe, here it is:
Overnight Pumpkin Streusel French Toast With Caramel Syrup
- 1 loaf french bread, cubed
- 8 oz. cream cheese
- 8 eggs
- 2½ cups milk
- 11/2 cups pumpkin puree
- ¾ cup sugar
- 2 Tablespoons vanilla
- 1 teaspoon pumpkin pie spice
- 2 tsp. cinnamon
- 1 tsp. ginger
- ½ tsp. cloves
- ½ tsp. cardamom
- ½ tsp nutmeg
- ½ cup oats
- ⅓ cup flour
- ¼ cup brown sugar
- ¼ teaspoon salt
- 6 Tablespoons cold butter
- 1 cup brown sugar
- 1 cup heavy cream
- 1 cup light corn syrup
- Spray 9x13 inch baking dish.
- Cut french bread into 1 inch cubes.
- Spread half french bread in bottom of baking dish.
- Cut cream cheese into ½ inch cubes. Evenly spread cream cheese over top of bread cubes.
- Place remaining bread cubes over cream cheese layer.
- In medium mixing bowl, combine eggs, milk, pumpkin, sugar, vanilla, spices. Pour evenly over bread.
- Cover with saran wrap and store in refrigerator overnight.
- In your food processor, add the flour, oats, salt, butter and brown sugar together. Process until mixed. (If you don’t have a food processor, add everything but butter into a bowl. Cut butter in with a pastry cutter.)
- Store in ziploc in refrigerator overnight.
In the morning
- Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.
- Remove the bread and pumpkin mixture from refrigerator and sprinkle streusel topping over top.
- Bake at 350 degrees F for 60-65 minutes or until golden brown. If it isn’t set, bake a little longer.
- Combine brown sugar, heavy cream and light corn syrup in a large pyrex measuring cup. Cook on high for about 1 ½ minute, and then remove and stir. Return to microwave, and cook a couple of minutes more. Remove from microwave and stir until dissolved.
- Drizzle over cooked french toast.
- Top with whipped cream if desired.
Here’s one more pumpkin recipe that is perfect when you get the word that someone is coming to visit unexpectedly and you want something to serve.
1 box of spice cake mix
1 15 oz. can of pumpkin
1 bag white chocolate chips, optional
Mix well. It will be thick. Pour into a 9x13 cake pan, or a bundt pan. Make sure the pan is very generously greased.
Bake at 350º for about 30 minutes, or until it is done.
Frost with a glaze or sprinkle with powdered sugar. Or, pour some of that caramel sauce (see recipe above) over the cake and top with whipped cream.
By the way, this time of year, it’s worth it to keep a carton of whipping cream in the frig. There’s nothing much easier than whipping cream up with a little sugar added for those unexpected visitors.
