K9 Deputy's Traffic stop results in the seizure of cocaine and a married couple in custody –
On March 1, 2013, at approximately 7:15 PM, a YCSO K9 deputy stopped a black Nissan Murano for driving without lights and following too closely, on north I17, just south of the 169 junction. The driver was identified as 38-year-old Richie Wilson who was with his wife, 31-year-old Kristy Wilson. Both are residents of Cottonwood. During a conversation with the occupants, the deputy developed suspicion they may be concealing contraband. Both Wilsons would not agree to a consent search of the vehicle.
The deputy deployed his K9 partner who alerted on a door seam of the Nissan. Based on the confirmed K9 alert, deputies searched the vehicle and found 3 clear plastic bags in the glove compartment. Each bag contained a while powdery substance resembling cocaine. A field test confirmed the content as cocaine. The total weight of powder was approximately 76 grams with an estimated value in excess of $2500. Both denied knowledge of the drugs. The suspects were booked at the Camp Verde Detention Center on charges including Possession of Drugs, Transportation of Drugs, and Possession of Drugs for Sale.
Prescott Woman Arrested for Auto Theft –
On February 5, 2013, YCSO detectives were notified regarding the presence of an unoccupied stolen vehicle in the Wal Mart parking lot on Gail Gardner Road in Prescott. The vehicle, a silver 2001 Toyota Tacoma pick-up, had been discovered during license plate reader patrol conducted by the National Insurance Crime Bureau (NICB). The Toyota had been reported stolen to the Phoenix Police Department on December 17, 2012, and listed 46-year-old Dana Hampton as a suspect. Detectives located the vehicle that day and reviewed parking lot surveillance video. The latest activity related to the truck showed a female with shoulder length dark hair dropping it off during late afternoon on February 4, 2013, and then leave in a silver sedan parked nearby. The female seen in the video matched the suspect description. It appeared the suspect had been using the Wal Mart lot as a place to access and park the stolen truck.
Detectives spoke with the truck's owner who stated that last December he had loaned the truck to his now ex-girlfriend, suspect Hampton, and she refused to return it. Detectives also developed source information that Hampton surveyed a local auto shop questioning the best way to change out a vehicle identification number.
On February 20, 2013, Hampton was located at her Iron Springs Road home in Prescott and arrested for Theft of Means of Transportation. She has since been released on a $3000 bond.
