Hockey's Back - Where Were You?

22 October 2016
PRESCOTT VALLEY, AZ- Hockey is back at the Prescott Valley Event Center. Too bad so few fans were there to see it.

The Northern Arizona University Ice Jacks Hockey Club played host to the Knights of California Lutheran University (Thousand Oaks), soundly taking the win 16-2.

The Knights got on the board first with a goal by Blake Aguilar just four minutes after puck drop, but NAU answered back less than a minute later when Lucas Lomax tied the game with his first goal on the night, he went on to record a hat trick with his third goal 7:46 into the second period. The first closed out 4-1 with NAU goals by Lomax, Kyle Lindstrom, Max Mahood, and Cody Briody.

Period two was a virtual shooting gallery for NAU, who recorded an impressive five unanswered goals by Lomax (2), Alex Shupe, Steven Thompson, and Mahood.

It got even uglier for the Knights in the third when NAU scored seven times by Chris Barrett, Shupe, Zaven Bablouzian, Briody, Mahood, and Trey Gonzalez. Shupe’s two goals in the final period earned him a hat trick as well.

The Knights went down swinging when Aguilar scored the second CLU goal with less than a minute left on the clock.

Goaltenders for the Knights, Jacob Palmer (1st period) and Brian Felt (2nd/3rd) got a workout, fending off 69 shots on goal compared to CLU’s effort of only 15.

Satish “Catfish” Athelli, Director of Business Development for PVEC and the resident hockey guru wasn’t discouraged by the low attendance, saying that the small but enthusiastic crowed is a good starting point for upcoming hockey events in Prescott Valley.

“I would have liked to see more people here, but we have tomorrow night’s game (a rematch of NAU and CLU) and next weekend’s NAU against Grand Canyon’, said Athelli. “With the upcoming hockey, the (Northern AZ) Suns, all of our high school tournaments, and other community activities, we don’t have an open weekend at the arena through next spring.”

Athelli and the staff at PVEC have been hard at work over the past two years to bring another professional hockey team to the arena and he reminds fans a lot of that will depend on them.

“If you want to see hockey here, we all need to, as a community, support hockey when it comes to town.”

The NAU vs Grand Canyon games on October 28 and 29 will feature a Cancer Awareness game on Saturday. Fans will be able to enter the arena from 8:00 am to 2:00 pm to paint the name of a loved one who has been effected by cancer on the ice. This event is sponsored by Creekside Painting and Simon Med.
