ASU Sun Devil Redshirt Sophomore Zahid Valencia Competes In Junior World Freestyle Championship in Tampere, Finland

Arizona State University Athletics announced redshirt sophomore Zahid Valencia will once again be representing the United States in the Junior World Freestyle Championships in Tampere Finland.

The California-native decided to attend Arizona State University after dominating the local competition in Bellflower, California, winning three state titles. After redshirting last season, Valencia was the Pac-12 Champion in the 2016-2017 campaign at 174 pounds while taking home wrestler and newcomer/freshman of the year for the conference; the first time one person has won both awards.

Part of Valencia’s impressive campaign was winning the UWW Junior Freestyle Championship, qualifying him for the Junior World Championship.

The competition, which takes place August 1st to 2nd, will be Valencia’s third appearance in the Junior Championship. It was stated Valencia took 10th place in 2015 and 7th place in 2016.

Valencia joins a team with other wrestlers from various universities across the United States.
